⚖️ Have You Had the Hard Conversation Yet?

Have you started a meeting with a lump in your throat and a lot of anxiety?

This is normal if you have to have a hard conversation. Doesn’t matter which one!

When your digital transformation execution does not follow your “committed” roadmap, these types of conversations need to happen.

It does not matter how experienced you are; they are always difficult. I have found that the only difference is that, with experience, you go into the conversation better prepared.

Here are some thoughts from my experience to help you with that conversation.

To avoid:

🙅‍♂️ Do not speculate

🙅‍♂️ Try to keep the emotion out of the conversation

🙅‍♂️ Avoid playing the blame game

🙅‍♂️ Do not make promises

Definitely Do:

✅ Communicate as soon as possible

✅ Be as factual as you can with your stakeholders

✅Be clear on the possible way(s) out of the “crisis” and when you will report back

✅ Keep the smallest part of your team possible on the investigation and resolution

✅ Disrupt your team only to help and do

✅ Go prepared for the conversation

So here's my reflection for you this week: Things happen, it’s how we respond. Hard conversations do not get easier; you get better at them with preparation and experience.
