Leadership That Builds Momentum: What does this mean?

This is a loaded, difficult question to answer!

For many years, I have been wondering how to answer this question, and the truth from my perspective is that it is not easy to answer. Every situation is unique and dynamic.

However, there are a few principles we can apply to ensure that our leadership is building momentum:

  • Be as clear as possible about the expected outcomes from the situation or initiative.

  • Trust and empower your team. They will provide you with the best guidance and possible ways forward.

  • Be ready to jump in and provide guidance or make decisions when required.

  • Encourage the team to move out of things like "analysis paralysis".

  • Help narrow the focus to achieve the expected outcomes. It is generally better to achieve outcomes in stages than to do so all at once.

  • Pause regularly and let the team measure their progress against the outcomes.

  • Be your team's leader, coach and chairleader.

John Maxwell says, "Leaders become great not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others."

We do not build momentum alone. We can lead, inspire and encourage, but momentum is built in conjunction with your team and the people around you!
