People, Process, Platform: The Real Order of Digital Transformation

Is this really the order of change, or are we fooling ourselves?
This is a conversation that regularly comes up in my discussions around how we successfully deliver on Digital Transformation. And I can confirm one simple truth: businesses that get this order wrong often experience transformation failure or, at best, partial success.
Too often, organisations start with the technology, the next shiny platform that promises to "solve everything." But technology is only as good as the people who use it and the processes that optimise its potential.
The real order of digital transformation is simple: People → Process → Platform.
Start with People.
Transformation begins by understanding your team, their challenges, confidence, and capacity to adapt. When people feel supported and involved, they don't just adopt change; they lead it.
Then Refine the Process.
Once you have clarity on how work should flow, simplify it. Build processes that reduce friction, not add more. If a process is broken, technology won't fix it; it will only amplify the problem.
Finally, Choose the Platform.
Only after people and processes are aligned should you bring in the tools that enable efficiency and scale. The best technologies support how your business already works at its best.
So, if you're planning your next transformation, pause before you sign on the dotted line and ask:
👉 Have we invested as much in our people and processes as we are about to invest in this platform?
Remember: People. Process. Platform. In that order — every time.
